People keep surfing Internet while on job, in leisure time, to hunt for latest happenings and to learn more other numerous things. Connectivity is what driving the world at presently.
Starting with Internet, networking is the basis and essence for it. Internet is defined as the network of large number of computers interconnected to each other. But have you ever given a thought that what is the underlying principle used to recognize your PC on such a large web of networks. How your sessions or PC on a network identified to transmit message to you that is meant for you.
The answer is IP address or Internet Protocol address. IP address is the unique address allotted to your machine while you log on to Internet. This address is exclusive to each computer and is identity ID for it on the network.
IP address is a group of four different numbers, like 192.168.100.100. Each set identifies a different field. Each domain name like www.abc.com maps to a unique IP address on the network. This IP address is distinctive to each domain and is identified on the network via this address only.
IP address is broadly termed as static and dynamic. When ever you make a fresh log on to the Internet or start a new session, you are allotted a new unique ID. This is called Dynamic IP address. So briefly, dynamic IP address is the address that changes with every fresh log on. Every user is allotted a dynamic IP address by its ISP. Contrast to this the address that does not change for every new log on account is called as Static IP address. This is allotted to users if they made special requests for such addresses. Static IP Address is used by the companies for mass mailing or to faster the communication via network.
IP addresses are broadly categorized into two categories: internal and external. Internal IP address is allotted to each computer on a network in an organization. To identify a particular computer on that Intranet, this internal IP address is unique to that machine. The address that is allotted to the computer linked to a router or ISP is external address. This address is basically the identification of that company on the outer network. Being so important for identification, this address is not secure. It can be viewed publicly. You can check your IP address using "ping", "Ipconfig" and "trace route". The address can be viewed by others on the network. For securing, you can use certain cloaking services.
This feature is just an introduction to the basic of networking which acts as a backbone for today’s connected world.
